Carols Around the Crib

An exhibition of crib scenes from around the world.

Christ Church is to be the back-drop for the first exhibition of crib scenes from around the world in Hilderstone, forming a truly international celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, as we prepare for Christmas. Comprising of private nativity scenes of all shapes, sizes and designs, this diverse collection will be displayed in the beautiful Georgian church of Hilderstone, as a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas and a celebration of our world-wide family.

Anyone wishing to share their tableaus with us is most welcome to do so. Whether they are home-made or shop-bought, old or new, we would love to exhibit them. Please ensure they are clearly labelled with your name, address and a contact number. Items can either be deposited at the Village Hall during the Coffee Morning on Saturday 8th December, or at Christ Church between 10-10.30am on Sunday 9th December.

The Exhibition will be open from 11am - 3pm on Sunday 9th December and will culminate in a specially-prepared 'Carols Around the Crib' service at 3pm, followed by mulled wine and, of course, mince pies!

Proceeds from this event will go to Staffordshire Women's Aid, which supports women and children who have fled, or still living with, domestic or sexual violence in Staffordshire Moorlands, Stafford Borough, Cannock District and South Staffs. Last year, alone, this charity responded to nearly 6,000 helpline calls, offered accommodation to 90 women and over 150 children in it refuges, and provided specialist support to more than 600 women and 200 children/young people. This, combined with its training of over 600 professionals on Domestic and Sexual violence, has established the Women's Aid as a vital service within our community.

We hope you can join us for this special start to Christmas.

Christmas is coming ...

Hilderstone Christmas Coffee Morning & Craft Fair

Now we are officially in the Christmas season, why not come and join us for our ever-popular village coffee morning on Saturday 8th December in the Village Hall? With a lovely array of Christmas gifts on offer, a tantalising array of cakes and refreshments, and the usual Tombola and raffle, this is stress-free shopping at its best!

All proceeds from this event will go towards the 'Access for All' project at Christ Church, which aims to make the church better suited to all ages, with full disability access, indoor toilet facilities and a tea bar. All monies raised at the event will be match-funded by a sponsor, so you can help us make a very real difference on the day.

Doors are open from 10am - 1pm.

Any cakes, raffle prizes or offers of help at the Coffee Morning, would be most gratefully received! Perishable items will be accepted from 8am onwards on the 8th December at the Village Hall, Hilderstone, whilst other items can be collected. For more information, please contact Lilley on Tel:01889 505013.

So come and join us on Saturday 8th December for a little Christmas shopping with friends.

    Churchyard Tidy up

In conjunction with the Best Kept Village Competition we will again be organising the monthly tidy up sessions which start on Saturday 21st April 2018 from 10 am to 12 noon.

In previous years volunteers have made such a difference to our Church yard and visitors really do appreciate seeing such a tidy church yard.

We are a friendly group and everyone is made very welcome. We have a coffee break at 11am.

No specific gardening experience is needed but it is easier if you are able to bring your own tools i.e. lawn shears, secateurs, rakes etc. although there are some spare tools to share.

Do come along at 10am on Saturday 21st April and see what a difference we can make again this year. The Church yard has been highly commented on by the Best Kept Village Judges and our points go towards the overall points awarded to Hilderstone Village.

    Save the Roebuck Campaign

    Dear Fellow Residents

We are pleased to report that we have had a very good response to the letter we sent to you all on the 10th April 2017 to assess the enthusiasm among Hilderstone residents to have a pub in the Village and we would like to thank those of you who responded over two weeks ago, for your patience. Due to the Easter break etc. we wanted to give enough time for responses to come in.

The Public Meeting has now been arranged for Tuesday 23rd May 2017 in the Village Hall. Doors open at 6:30pm and the meeting will start at 7:30pm sharp.

Mr Ian Bradford of Lymestone Brewery has kindly agreed to attend to confirm his tentative interest in the future of The Roebuck at this early stage.

The meeting will be structured so as to bring everyone up to date as to the current situation as we know it, provide some solid suggestions and hopefully agree a strategy to save the pub.

A bar has been arranged (hopefully selling Lymestone beer).

If you haven't already done so, please advise if you are able to attend or not so that we can gauge numbers and ensure that you are kept updated if you are unable to attend.

Thank you again for your support.

    Hilderstone Village Consulation 2017

    Invitation to Village Consultation 2017

Back in the Spring of 2013 and 2014 the Parish Council held consultation meetings in the Village Hall with feedback sessions each time. The objective was to provide information from the Parish Council and gain opinions from householders on what they would like to see happening in Hilderstone over the next 5-10years, together with bringing about new ideas for community involvement.

Since that time the village has had success with four new ventures – the Village Christmas Concert – the Village Dinner Party – the introduction of Film Nights and the setting up of the Hilderstone Website together with continuation of the Village Christmas Dinner & Entertainment, the Summer Fair and Bi-annual Scarecrow weekend. Unfortunately 'The Roebuck' has come and gone again after a successful re-opening two years ago. At present Admiral Breweries wants to sell the freehold as they do not wish to install another tenant...

Christ Church interregnum - 2017 Update

New Vicar for Christ Church Hilderstone

Further to my article in the December/January Parish Magazine on this topic, things have now moved on with regard to the presentation and process for selecting a new vicar.

Thank you to those people who submitted letters to the question I asked 'What qualities are we, as a village, looking for in a new vicar?' and your views have been incorporated in The Profile.

Over the Christmas period both the PCCs subcommittees in Fulford and Hilderstone, together with Rev Preb Cathy Case, have been working hard to prepare The Profile. This 19 page document details the objectives of each parish, the village profile and the Mission Action Plan that we expect the new vicar to assist us in achieving. The document will also be used to enable a candidate to determine if this is the post for him/her. It will be available to candidates on the website once they have viewed the advert that will appear in the Church Times before the end of January 2017. You also will be able to view The Profile on our Hilderstone Village website about the same time. Once this process has been completed the interviews will commence in March 2017... Download the full text here.

    Download The Profile here

    The Roebuck

The next Parish Council meeting will take place on Wednesday 25th January 2017 at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. Any local resident interested in forming a community group to buy and run the Roebuck should attend this meeting or contact the Parish Clerk by this date to express an interest in joining such a group.
Contact details for the Parish Clerk are on the contacts page of the website.

    The Roebuck Current Situation

    The Roebuck

The Parish Council has been in contact with Admiral Taverns due to the recent 'boarding up' of the Roebuck.

Admiral Taverns has provided the Parish Council with the following statement:

"We have taken the decision not to re-open the pub with a tenancy and therefore have decided to sell the freehold of the pub so it will be going on our 'for sale' list in the near future".

As discussed in 2013, Hilderstone Parish Council does not have the financial resources to purchase the Roebuck and to take out a loan to do so would be a huge financial risk to all residents living in Hilderstone Parish. The Roebuck is still on the Stafford Borough Council Register of Assets of Community Value which means that if Admiral finds a commercial buyer for The Roebuck it must notify the local authority. This notification then instigates a 6 month 'moratorium period' during which any local community group has the opportunity to buy the public house.

The Parish Council is of the opinion that the Roebuck's best chance of survival is that it becomes a 'free' house and not tied to one brewery giving the landlord a better chance of making a decent profit. Its future would also depend greatly on a high level of support from a large proportion of village residents.

The Parish Council will continue to liaise with Admiral Taverns over the coming months particularly in respect of external maintenance so that the building and surrounds do not become a local eyesore.

    Christ Church interregnum - Update

In selecting a new Vicar, have your say. Read more here.

    Christ Church interregnum

Many people might already be aware Rev Preb Peter Dakin has now had to retire due to ill health as the vicar of Christ Church Hilderstone and also at our sister church at Fulford. The church's are both now in a interregnum as from the 1st November 2016. Service will continue each Sunday with local vicars taking the services until a new vicar can be found.

    Village Appraisal and Discussion

The Village Appraisal and discussion with the Parish Council will not now take place until September. Reasons given by Stafford Borough Council is due to holidays and logistics in getting the material for the exhibition ready in time.
Also from the Parish Councils point of view, once the holiday season starts attendance might be low and we want everyone to see what is being proposed.

    What a coffee morning!

    LIBRARY CONSULTATION

Staffordshire County Council is consulting with the public on the future of the library service until 7th October 2014. There are currently no plans to close any libraries, but as total user numbers are falling, the Council needs to re-design the service to bring it up-to-date and make it more cost-effective. Residents are being invited to give their views on the type of services libraries should offer and how best they can be run. A series of presentations and drop in sessions are being held at libraries across the county.

    Hilderstone Village Market

Next Market is on Saturday 28th June and then Saturday 26th July. There was a great turn out at the Village Hall and all produce from the stalls was sold. By 12.30. the tables were looking bare! We had no local villagers at the local table. (so please villagers come on... bring flowers, tomatoes, plants, jam, marmalade, chutney.......)

The plant stall took £100 but he is not coming again, so plants will be needed next time, please all you green fingered people get sowing and growing.

We had no jewellery stall but we had a beautiful card stall and super fold away hand made bags.

Thank you so much to all stall holders without you we would not have a market.
